Aneumastis

Aneumastis is an oval-shaped symmetrical biraphid diatom with pinched tips.  Its areolae are deep and complex, puncturing through to the inside where they create deep pits- this feature can only be seen with an electron microscope, however.  It lives at the surface of the bottom sediment, and may also live on or between sand particles.

A. tusculus

  • Cells are 45-67 µm in length, 16.5 - 20.7 µm in width.

  • Rows of striae per 10 µm are 11-12.

  • Areolae are coarse and dashes, not dots.  May be spaced irregularly within the striae.

  • Striae radiate more strongly as they become closer to the poles.
