Symmetrical biraphid diatoms are those which are symmetrical in both their length-wise and width-wise directions, and have a raphe system on both valves.   This makes them well-equipped to move about over surfaces and to burrow through mud and bottom sediments.  This kind of diatom is one of the most mobile groups of diatoms.
