Diploneis

Species of Diploneis are oval shaped and primarily have blunted ends.  The defining characteristic of the genus is its longitudinal canals: all species have two length-wise canals, one on each side of the raphe.  The canals' purpose is uncertain.

D. marginestriata

  • Cells are 12 - 23 µm in length, 6.4 - 7.4 µm in width.

  • Rows of striae are 18 - 19 per 10 µm.

  • Valves are narrow, with a small and non-inflated central area.

  • Longitudinal canals are straight and nearly parallel for the entire length of the valve.

  • Striae are radiate in smaller specimens, but parallel at the center in larger ones.
