Diploneis
Species of Diploneis are oval shaped and primarily have blunted ends. The defining characteristic of the genus is its longitudinal canals: all species have two length-wise canals, one on each side of the raphe. The canals' purpose is uncertain.

Cells are 12 - 23 µm in length, 6.4 - 7.4 µm in width.

Rows of striae are 18 - 19 per 10 µm.

Valves are narrow, with a small and non-inflated central area.

Longitudinal canals are straight and nearly parallel for the entire length of the valve.

Striae are radiate in smaller specimens, but parallel at the center in larger ones.
