Surirelloid Diatoms

Surirelloid diatoms are bilaterally symmetrical, and have an extremely well-developed raphe system that typically is encircles the perimeter of the valve face.  Because of their raphe system, these diatoms are very motile and can move with relative speed through the mud and sediments at the bottoms of lakes and rivers.
