Entomoneis

Entomoneis is a complex and structurally unique genus of diatom.  Its shape is similar to that of a figure 8, where the top and bottom loops have been rotated so that they are not in the same plane.  Lobed "wings" extend from the body of the frustule.

E. ornata

  • Cells are 71-93 µm in length, 23-43 µm in width.

  • Rows of striae are 20-24 per 10 µm (on the "wings").

  • The valve face twists so that the whole face cannot be in focus all at once.

  • The presence of thick keels extending from the "body" to the "wings" distinguishes E. ornata from other species of Entomoneis..
