Centric Diatoms

Centric diatoms tend to form discs or cylinders, although they can take on other circular shapes too.  Because of their shape, they tend to float freely in the open water.  In many Wisconsin lakes they can develop large populations in summer and provide a good portion of the energy for the base of aquatic food chains.
