Lindavia

Lindavia are medium to large disc shaped diatoms known for their delicate and variable ornamentation.  Its members include species that were formerly classified under Puncticulata, Handmannia, and some from Cyclotella including former C. ocellata.

L. comensis

  • Cells are 5-12 µm in diameter.  Rows of striae 9-12 per 10 µm at  the circumference.

  • Central ornamentation varies from star-shaped to irregular, and striae are variable in length.

  •  Valve faces are slightly curved at edges, flat at the center.

L. ocellata

  • Cells are 3.7 - 15 µm in diameter.  Rows of striae are 15-30 per 10 µm at circumference.

  • Central area takes up 1/3 to 2/3 of the valve face, and has 2-6 distinct depressions

  • Striae end irregularly at the central end

  • Formerly classified under Cyclotella or Pantocsekiella

(Img. 2-4 are same cell, optically dissected.)

L. rossii

  • Cells are 6.3 - 16.5 µm in diameter.  Rows of striae are 20-22 per 10 µm along the circumference.

  • Striae end irregularly at the central end.

  • Ornamentation on the central area of the valve face is variable in its grouping and areolae size: the photos here show linear organization, but ornamentation may also be more scattered.
