Melosira

Melosira are cylindrical diatoms with a straightforward rigid structure and very little to no ornamentation.  Some species may have undulate walls, although M. varians is straight.  M. varians is likely the only species to be found in Lake Mendota.

M. Varians

  • Cells are 6-30 µm in diameter, 5-15 µm in height.

  • Cells have little to no ornamentation.

  • Cells linked without spines.
