Cyclotella
Cyclotella are typically small disc centrics without much central ornamentation. Like other centric genera, there can be a noteworthy amount of variation within and between species. However, only C. meneghiniana has been found in Lake Mendota.

Cells are 6.24 - 18.12 µm in diameter.

Rows of striae are 7-8 per 10 µm along the circumference.

Distinct inner and outer areas. Outer ring has pronounced striae, central area is typically smooth or with minimal ornamentation.

Central area may include 1-4 small indents, known as fultoportulae.
