Cyclotella

Cyclotella are typically small disc centrics without much central ornamentation.  Like other centric genera, there can be a noteworthy amount of variation within and between species.  However, only C. meneghiniana has been found in Lake Mendota.

C. meneghiniana

  • Cells are 6.24 - 18.12 µm in diameter.

  • Rows of striae are 7-8 per 10 µm along the circumference.

  • Distinct inner and outer areas.  Outer ring has pronounced striae, central area is typically smooth or with minimal ornamentation.

  • Central area may include 1-4 small indents, known as fultoportulae.
