Caloneis

Caloneis, like its sister genus Pinnularia, is defined by its chambered striae.  These striae give it the appearance of having a second line across the striae, as shown on the right.  The genus Caloneis is very similar to the genus Pinnularia; some researchers think they should be considered one genus.

C. amphisbaena

  • Cells are 59-77 µm in length, 21-26.4 µm in width.

  • Rows of striae are 15-17 per 10 µm.

  • Cells are oval with small protruding round points.

  • C. amphisbaena differs from other Calonies species by its diamond-shaped central area where the striae do not go.
