Placoneis
Placoneis is a genus of symmetrical biraphid diatoms which is morphologically similar to the genus Navicula. Cells are shaped like inflated diamonds with pointed ends. Striae are made up of single rows of areolae which protrude inwards, not outwards.

Cells are 30-56 µm in length, 16-20 µm in width.

Rows of striae per 10 µm are 7-9 near the center, and can be up to 10 near the tips.

Striae parallel or slightly radiate at the center, and convergent at the tips.
