Pinnularia

Pinnularia is a genus of large elongate symmetrical biraphid diatoms.  Like its sister genus Caloneis, is defined by its chambered striae.  These striae give it the appearance of having a second line across the striae, as shown on the right.  The genera Caloneis and Pinnularia are very similar, to the point that some researchers think they should be considered one genus.

P. viridis

  • Cells are 40-90 µm in length, 9-16 µm in width.

  • Rows of striae are 7-12 per 10 µm.

  • Striae parallel or slightly radiate at the center, and convergent at the tips.

Unidentified Pinnularia sp.

  • Does not seem to match any of the available species of Pinnularia nor Caloneis.

  • Length of individuals varies from 51-67 µm.

  • Striae are less coarse and more dense per 10 µm than C. viridis, and its valve margin is more undulate.  Aditionally, striae are parallel at the center but slightly radiate at the tips.

  • Raphe bend towards the same side on both ends, and that side also tends to have shorter striae at the center.
