Encyonema

Encyonema is a biraphid genus that is asymmetrical over the apical axis.  Its raphe do not go to the tips of the valve face, and the ventral side instead stretches past the raphe ends to form the tips.  The raphe ends at the tips deflect towards the ventral side, unlike Cymbella which deflects to the dorsal side.  Cells grow alone or in colonies, and mostly live in lake and river bottoms.

E. auerswaldii

  • Cells are 23-33 µm in length, 7.6-11.2 µm in width.

  • Rows of striae per 10 µm are 10-12 near the center, and 12-15 near the tips.

  • Ventral margin has a slight bulge near the center.

  • Raphe are straight and undeflected at the center.

  • Individual areolae are coarse and easily distinguishable.

Unidentified Encyonema sp.

  • Fascia on both the ventral and dorsal sides make this specimen unlike any of the species described on other online sources.

  • Ventral margin is arched slightly in the same direction as the dorsal margin.

  • Raphe are straight and undeflected.

  • Dorsal striae are parallel to the transapical axis.  Ventral striae are slightly radiate at the enter and become convergent near the tips.

  • 1-2 ghost striae or areolae may be present under the central fascia on both sides.
